Boomers who once flocked to Florida are increasingly ditching the state for southern Appalachia. NEW LOOK Sign up to get the inside scoop on today’s biggest stories in markets, tech, and business — delivered daily. AdvertisementFor decades, Florida has remained a top destination for retirees looking to settle down roots as they enjoy their golden years. Many boomers moving into southern Appalachia have also bypassed Florida altogether. But some new residents fear Dawson County will simply become a northern outpost of the vast Atlanta metropolitan region, known for its suburban sprawl.

In 2017 I decided it was time to date again and so I downloaded a dating app. I live in a small town where everything closes by 9 p.m. It was the most attention I had gotten on a dating app in years. Like most app dating, I rarely met anyone in real life. I live in a small town where everything closes earlyI live in a tiny, boring town in the North Georgia mountains.

Allyn Stockton Jr. , who made his first court appearance for Giuliani last week, isn’t well-known outside of North Georgia. Perhaps his biggest claim to fame was a 2015 appearance before a congressional panel looking into a bear-hunting sting carried out by authorities along the Georgia-North Carolina border.

It’s like there’s no point in asking who started this because it’s a really, really old antagonism. I think that’s probably what’s most critical right now is that all of our entertainment, our news media, it’s all made in cities. And he’s really pretty horrible, and he doesn’t feed them enough, and that’s really sad. You’re going to have a flat tire, and the guy that pulls up to help you is going to tell your dad within minutes. It’s not like most books you’re going to see.

As the storm took shape over the Great Lakes on Thursday, a weather phenomenon known as a bomb cyclone was likely to develop from a "rapidly deepening low-pressure" system, the National Weather Service (NWS) said. The cyclone could spawn snowfalls of a half inch (1.25 cm) per hour and howling winds from the Upper Midwest to the interior Northeast, producing near-zero visibility, the weather service said. "It's dangerous and threatening," President Joe Biden said at the White House, urging Americans with travel plans to not delay and to set off on Thursday. Hundreds of Texans died in February 2021 after the state's power grid failed amid wintry storms, leaving millions without electricity. Greg Carbin, chief of forecast operations at the NWS Weather Prediction Center in Maryland, said freezing or below-freezing cold would bisect central Florida, with temperatures about 25 degrees below normal.
In its wake, the cyclone could spawn snowfalls of a half inch an hour and winds of more than 50 mph (80 kph) in the Upper Midwest and interior Northeast, the weather service said. "This will lead to dangerous, to at times impossible, land and air travel leading up to the holiday weekend," the agency said on its website. Temperatures in parts of the Southern Plains and Southeast could stay below freezing -- 30-plus degrees less than normal -- for multiple days, the weather service predicted. The weather service also warned of freezing rain in parts of Oregon and Washington in the Northwest, where the storm originated, late Thursday. That would be the biggest daily drop in output since the freeze of February 2021 when a winter storm cut gas supplies from Texas and forced the Texas electric grid operator to impose rolling power outages.
Mr. Warnock consolidated Democratic voters, while Mr. Walker struggled to rally his party behind him. Mr. Walker was wrapping up a campaign that appears to have failed to consolidate the disparate wings of his party. A Georgia woman whose mysterious death was initially described by authorities as a "personal and targeted" killing was found to have died by suicide, officials said Friday. A spokeswoman for the state law enforcement agency said it provided the autopsy results to the sheriff’s office Thursday. The sheriff’s office also said it found no evidence linking her death to suicide. “At this time, the investigation is leading us to the proposition that Mrs. Collier’s death was personal and targeted,” the sheriff’s office said on Sept. 30. "This was the consensus of all of the agencies involved in the initial and ongoing investigation into Mrs. Collier’s death," he said.
Cobb County, a one-time GOP stronghold, is now critical for Democrats running statewide in Georgia. Warnock's strong suburban support will be key as he again faces Walker in a Dec. 6 runoff election. With over 95% of county precincts reporting in the Senate race, Warnock was leading Walker by nearly 17 points (57%-40.5%) in Cobb County. The current raw vote total is 175,387 votes for Warnock to 125,324 votes for Walker, an advantage of over 50,000 votes in this jurisdiction for the incumbent. Which begs the question: why has Cobb County become such a bellwether for statewide Democrats?
Among the items found with Collier’s body were a red tote bag and a partly burned blue tarp. Investigators obtained the security video after they got a tip that Collier's daughter was seen at the shop that Saturday, the sheriff's office said. A review of the video showed that Collier herself was there — not her daughter, the sheriff's office said. The state crime lab was still conducting an autopsy, the sheriff's office said last week. Collier's body was discovered after a late model van that she'd been driving was found unlocked and unoccupied at a road pullout, authorities said.
Warnock has a 47%-42% lead over Walker in the Georgia Senate race, per a new Marist Poll. In the poll, Warnock was backed by 94% of Democrats, while Walker earned 83% support among the GOP. Warnock performed strongly in the Atlanta metropolitan area; in the Atlanta suburbs, he edged out Walker by three-percentage points (47%-44%). (A recent CBS News/YouGov poll showed Warnock with a narrower 51%-49% edge over Walker.) Brian Kemp holds a six-point lead (50%-44%) over Democratic gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams among registered voters in a rematch of their 2018 contest.
Investigators have also found no evidence linking the death of Deborrah Collier, 59, to suicide, the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Neither the sheriff’s office nor Collier’s daughter immediately responded to requests for comment. Deputies found the van a short time later on the side of a state road in Clarkesville, the report says. The sheriff's office said an autopsy was being conducted by a state crime lab. The news release said that the investigation continues and that authorities executed search warrants at locations directly tied to Collier.
Cate Culp: So today, we're going to be looking at Paisley, it's a 1960 Euro beetle and this car was built for our charity beetle promotion. Cate: Once it comes back from blast, we make a sort of a full list of the amount of metal work that needs to be done so any replacement panels that we need to purchase to go into metal work. So there was a bit of a bit of a process trying to work out how to engineer that. I think I bring a lot of that into the design work of the cars that we build. But at the end of the day, they're still a beetle, and they still have that same energy.
